My Sleepy Came to Kindy

Some mornings, even the smallest things can feel like a very big effort.

A gentle story about feeling tired, finding comfort and discovering that it's okay to slow down.

Not every child arrives at kindy full of energy and ready to explore. Sometimes children need a little more time, a quieter space or the reassurance of someone who understands how they're feeling.

Beyond the Story

When Little Bodies Need to Slow Down

Children don't always have the words to tell us they're tired.

Sometimes we notice it in the way they move, the way they respond to others or how difficult everyday experiences suddenly seem.

A child who usually enjoys joining in might prefer to sit quietly. Another might become frustrated more easily, seek extra reassurance or find it difficult to concentrate.

It's easy to focus on encouraging children to participate, but perhaps the more important question is whether we're recognising what their bodies and emotions are telling us.

Sleepy's story invites us to think about the different rhythms children bring into our learning environments.

Some children need movement. Some need connection. And sometimes, what a child needs most is permission to rest.

When we respond with patience, flexibility and understanding, we're showing children that their wellbeing matters more than keeping up with everyone else.

What might we notice when we stop expecting every child to follow the same rhythm and begin responding to what each child needs in that moment?
